Foul: Not cleaning up after your dog is an affront to society

There’s a lot of confusion about the law and dog mess – mostly among non-dog owners. The fact is that dog mess is most definitely an eyesore, a health hazard, and an affront to a modern, organised society.
As dog owners, we have legal duties to clean up when our dogs mess in a public place – and by mess I mean dog pooh! The law does not apply to dog wee.

Where & when don’t we have to scoop the poop?

Nor does it apply to registered blind or deaf people, who aren’t required to clean up after assistance dogs. There is also an exemption for poop scooping on some types of public land. This means that we don’t have to pick up pooh on:
• Roads & highways with a speed limit in excess of 50mph
• Woodlands or land used for agriculture
• Any rural common land
• Land that is mainly moor, marshland or heath

Most local councils in the UK require us dog owners to carry disposable bags when we take our dogs out to any public place. Some councils are generous enough to offer free scoops and bags. You can find out about this by asking your local authority’s animal warden unit.
Watch out for special dog pooh bins to dispense with your pooh bags. Though more and more councils are saving cash by allowing properly tied up or sealed bags to be disposed of in common ore garden bins. Whatever if you can’t find a dog bin, simply double up your pooh bag and dispose of it in a conventional litter bin anyway.

Clean Neighbourhoods

If you come across a street that is littered with dog mess, ask your local council to clean it. It’s important to stay on the right side of the local authority as councils are getting more power to tackle public dog mess under the law, like the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, which repeals the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996.
The new law contains legal measures to prevent dog mess and allows councils and communities to create byelaws relating to dog mess. Councils can also issue the appalling dog control orders against all dog owners or just individuals for offences like allowing a dog to foul a public space.
The fixed penalty orders in relation to dog control orders is £75 where there is no local rate set. Very serious cases allow magistrates to issue maximum penalties of £1,000
The charity that runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign – ENCAMS – has a leaflet on Dog Fouling and the Law. If you are doing what is required by the law and still have a problem with ignorant members of the public, print out a copy and carry it with you to give to the busybodies to put them right on the law.

    CDPOM/ Celebrate Pets are a great bunch of people. They have been looking after our cat for just about every period away from home for the last five years, from single days to a couple of weeks. They are really great with him and no extra seems too large for them from watering the plants to putting the bins out. We always get a text from them so that we know visits have started and comprehensive reports on what he's been like when we're away. Cannot recommend highly enough, completely reliable and they love our cat. What more could you want?

    As a customer for over 7 years and a regular traveller, I have been delighted with the service provided in looking after my home and pets. Easy and simple booking and payment process, prompt responses, and never a problem to arrange care for my cats even at very short notice. I have complete confidence in leaving my home and pets in their hands. They keep me updated while I'm away and even put a pint of milk in the fridge if I'm away for more than a few days.

    We are so pleased we found CDPOM as our cat, Lucy, was so distressed in the cattery. We have been using their services for several years now and have always found them extremely reliable and we are always confident that Lucy is in safe hands.     Louise and all the team at CDPOM have been amazing. I have used them for many years to look after my dog and the team obviously love the animals. They have helped me out at short notice and also kept Molly for longer when I've been delayed. Louise also house sits which give me peace of mind that someone is around when I'm away and less stressful on Molly. Thanks again and cant recommend highly enough.

    So reliable, I would highly recommend Louise and her Cat visiting service. Going away can be quite stressful with cats, as they don't like the disruption of being moved elsewhere, or having strangers in the house. After trying a few things, I realised home visits is really the best way. It was hard to find a reliable service at first, after a few issues in the past, so CDPOM was a godsend. Louise has been looking after my cats for over 10 years, and she has removed the stress out of travelling, as I know my cat will be in good hands with her. Thanks Louise!
