The Jack Russell may be a small dog, but the will inside can only be called mighty. This means that a dog that is not well trained will probably run, if not ruin, the household.

This is why it’s so important to be consistent with your terrier at all times in its life. You need to be able to give him or her a firm scolding when rules are broken. In contrast you also need to be ready to heap plenty of praise when he or she obeys your commands.

While Jack Russells may take time and patience to train, most eventually submit to the authority of their owners.

The most important thing is to apply the rules consistently to keep your dog in line.

Natural Hunting Instincts

Jack Russells have very strong hunting instincts. These may well provoke it to try to attack the family cat or take off from his outside space at the whiff of the first interesting scent.

It is not possible to completely obliterate these instincts through Jack Russell training, you need to take proper precautions to keep them under control.

This probably means keeping your dog on a lead/leash when you are out walking together and making sure your outside space is sufficiently confined when not.

But, as these dogs are enthusiastic diggers, it’s advisable to check the perimeter of your space every now and again to ensure your dog is not creating an escape route. It is also advisable not to have a Jack Russellas well as cats or or other small pets like gerbils, rabbits and guinea pigs in the same property, as there’s every likelihood your dog will decide to “hunt” on occasion.

Jack Russell training does take a little more time and patience than other types of dog training, but the rewards can be phenomenal. These small dogs are packed with personality, and tend to be fiercely loyal to their owners.

With proper Jack Russell training, your terrier will entertain and delight your family.

    Louise and all the team at CDPOM have been amazing. I have used them for many years to look after my dog and the team obviously love the animals. They have helped me out at short notice and also kept Molly for longer when I've been delayed.     So reliable, I would highly recommend Louise and her Cat visiting service. Going away can be quite stressful with cats, as they don't like the disruption of being moved elsewhere, or having strangers in the house. After trying a few things, I realised home visits is really the best way. It was hard to find a reliable service at first, after a few issues in the past, so CDPOM was a godsend. Louise has been looking after my cats for over 10 years, and she has removed the stress out of travelling, as I know my cat will be in good hands with her. Thanks Louise!
